KCMMB Concrete and Bridge Decks

Research performed by the University of Kansas in conjunction with many state DOTs indicates bridge decks should be treated differently than other outdoor concrete applications. Because of the importance of bridges to transportation and the difficulty caused by repair or replacement of bridges the KCMMB recommends that all mix designs for bridge decks be prepared by the consultant responsible for design of the structure. It should also be noted that the life of the bridge deck is not only influenced by the concrete mix design but also the construction of the deck.

As an example of a procedure for bridge deck design and construction the following links have been provided. These links are for a series of Kansas Department of Transportation Special Provisions for the design and construction of bridge decks. These Special Provisions are the result of joint research done by the University of Kansas and KDOT.
